Review of WHERE THE RHYTHM TAKES YOU by Sarah Dass

Thank you to Harper360YA for always sending me the best ARC's.

Themes: Music, first love, identity, grief

Seventeen-year-old Reyna has spent most of her life at the Plumeria, her family’s gorgeous seaside resort in Tobago. But what once seemed like paradise is starting to feel more like purgatory. It’s been two years since Reyna’s mother passed away, two years since Aiden—her childhood best friend, first kiss, first love, first everything—left the island to pursue his music dreams.

Reyna’s friends are all planning their futures and heading abroad. Even Daddy seems to want to move on, leaving her to try to keep the Plumeria running.

And that’s when Aiden comes roaring back into her life—as a VIP guest at the resort.

Aiden is now one-third of DJ Bacchanal—the latest, hottest music group on the scene. While Reyna has stayed exactly where he left her, Aiden has returned to Tobago with his Grammy-nominated band and two gorgeous LA socialites. And he may (or may not be) dating one of them…

I actually finished this book a few weeks ago but have been on so many deadlines I haven't had a moment to write my review. I don't know why but this heatwave has made me feel like it's the appropriate time to post!

Where The Rhythm Takes You is set in Tobago, so it's giving me all the Caribbean feels that I can't get right now! Reyna works at her family's hotel resort with her dad. As much as she loves the hotel she has put her life on hold and her art to be there 24/7 as she feels like it's what her late mother would have wanted but then her ex Aiden, now a famous musician returns back to the island. Reyna and Aiden split up on bad terms and now she has to cater to him, his band mates and these two gorgeous ladies and they both don't acknowledge that they were each others first love. I could feel the awkwardness through the pages of them avoiding each other and Aiden being back home but now he's famous. I liked that it wasn't rushed for them to start interacting because that made it more relatable and who doesn't love a will they, won't they?

I love this book! I love that it's a West Indian protagonist, I love the Black love, I love that Reyna is so uptight but you know she would be fun if she could relax! There's a scene where her and Aiden are dancing and I was just like yes! I love that from reading the book I could hear the music and taste the food. It's a great debut and a must read.

5/5
